E is for Education

Welcome back to the Single Dad Zone.  In speaking to many single dads, I have found the struggles and obstacles I faced are commonplace.  I also found many resources for single moms, but few for single dads. I created the Single Dad Zone to be a place for us to share what we have learned to be better and more efficient dads.

E is for Education

This is an A to Z series on the three core areas where I believe single dads need to focus: Mindset, Fitness and Organization. E is for education.  #Lifelonglearner

E is for EducationOne of the most important secrets to success in life is education.  If you want to get ahead in life, you need to educate yourself.  Feeling frustrated with your life, get educated.  I’m not even talking about formal education. I’m talking about the school of hard knocks, the plethora of knowledge available to us in the so-called Information Age, mentorship and the variety of training offered all over from YouTube to Podcasts to Udemy.

One of the challenges is that there is too much information. I often find myself getting overwhelmed with information overload.  I focus my quest for knowledge on areas I want to improve myself.  Personal growth and development is a never ending quest.  What you want to learn about is really up to you.  There is a whole World of information and people out there.

We do not have a lack of information or training.  Typically, we have a lack of effort.  If you want to learn how to be a better public speaker, to salsa dance, to get in shape, to being a better parent, there is a book, video or podcast on it.

I wish to share some great tools that I use that I hope you will find helpful.

Two great resources for educating yourself on how to manage children are:

  1. Parent Encouragement Program (PEP):  http://pepparent.org/
  2. Empowering Parents:  https://www.empoweringparents.com/

I recommend some Podcasts for personal growth:

  1. Lewis Howes:  https://lewishowes.com/sogpodcast/
  2. Chalene Johnson:  http://www.chalenejohnson.com/podcast/
  3. Knowledge for Men:  http://www.knowledgeformen.com/podcasts/

Five Must Read Books that you can find in your local library or any online store:

  1. Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl
  2. The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson
  3. How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie
  4. The Magic of Thinking Big by David Schwartz
  5. Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

There are also countless Apps.  Want to learn a new language?  Check out Mango Languages, Duolingo, Babbel or Rosetta Stone are all great options.

If you are looking for motivation and insight, check out Ted Talks (https://www.ted.com/).  I recommend Simon Sinek, Mel Robbins and Tony Robbins to start with.

You can learn about almost anything at Udemy (https://www.udemy.com/).  Udemy frequently offers discounts on their courses.

Finally, find a mentor.  Jim Rohn says you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.  A mentor can improve that average.
